NIGHT PRAYER: Monday 4/24

Lord...

What was the most important thing I did today?

What were the most significant words I spoke?

What was my most fruitful use of this day's time?

Where did I turn when I needed help?

How did I grow in the life of your Spirit?

Where did I seek my heart's desire?

I have answers to all these questions, Lord,
    many, varied, good and true
but here at day's end, as I take a look back,
   night prayer's a moment,  a place, a time
        when everything comes together:

   - the importance of finding and making time
to spend alone in prayer with you...

    - to speak with you, my heart to yours,
the story of this day's sorrows and joys...

    - time to harvest the fruit of your grace
nurtured, ripened and gathered this day...

    - time to remember, Lord, every time
I leaned on you as you turned to me...

    - an evening respite, to breathe in deeply
the Spirit whose gifts enliven my soul...

Night falls soft in the shadows, Lord,
on the road I travel each day,
the night prayer path of my heart's desire
leading me home to you and your peace...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

All Through The Night seems a perfect choice for this evening's prayer. This beautiful setting is in Welsh, the song's original language, followed by the English lyrics. If you listen carefully you'll hear the tune's Welsh title in the second, fourth and last line of each verse: Ar hyd y nos...

Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night)

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels I will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved one's watch am keeping,
All through the night

Angels watching, e'er around thee,
All through the night
Midnight slumber close surround thee,
All through the night
They will of all fears disarm thee,
No forebodings should alarm thee,
They will let no peril harm thee
All through the night

While the moon her watch is keeping
All through the night
While the weary world is sleeping
All through the night
O'er thy spirit gently stealing
Visions of delight revealing
Breathes a pure and holy Spirit
All through the night
