Today is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

Please join me in this litany to Joseph,
the patron saint of all workers...

For those I know and for all the unemployed
and those who have recently been fired or laid off...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all who are  overworked,
    doing two or more jobs
and raising a family as well...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For laborers around the world
who are underpaid, neglected and abused...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who grow and raise the food I eat,
who stock the shelves, bake the bread,
cut the meat, arrange the fresh produce,
ring up, bag or deliver my groceries...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those whose hard, dirty, gritty work
benefits me, my comfort and my life style...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all victims of human trafficking
who are bought and sold as commodities...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who design and plan,
dig and construct, and clean and maintain
the buildings and malls, the schools and the stores
where I live, work, buy and sell, learn and play
day by day from dawn to dusk and through the night...

St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those whose work only allows them
to live pay check to pay check - or always in debt,

St. Joseph, pray for us...

For restaurant workers
who prepare and cook my food,
who mix my drinks, serve my meal and
who clean up after me when I'm gone...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those whose everyday toil and work
puts their lives on the line for me,
for my welfare, safety and freedom...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who repair and fix
my car, my plumbing and my computer,
my appliances, cell phone and HVAC,
my flooded basement and all the many jobs
that must be completed by tomorrow
        - at the latest!

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who care for my health
no matter when or how sick I may be,
risking their own lives for my recovery...

    Saint Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who fill the potholes and  plow the roads,
who shovel my path, cut my lawn, trim my hedges,
rake my leaves; plant, weed and tend my garden,
making my street, my yard and my house
the place I call my home...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all those who teach and instruct me,
    coach and train me, preach the word and pray for me;
who sculpt, paint and draw for me
who sing, play and act for me,
in poetry and prose to warm my heart,
who find, report and bring the daily news to me,
the good news and bad, 24/7/365...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

For all of those who in hundreds of ways
 make my life every day
    finer, easier, happier, safer,
    more healthy, free and peaceful,
all on account of the work they do,
    the work they need,
the work that serves you, Lord our God,
the work that serves us, one and all...

    St. Joseph, pray for us...

Protect us, Lord,while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

It wasn't easy finding a song tonight! The best Saint Joseph hymns are really Christmas songs! But then I found this great piece about work, the work that's ours to do...

May the Work I've Done Speak For Me

May the work I’ve done speak for me
May the work I’ve done speak for me
When I’m resting in my grave
There is nothing to be said
May the work I’ve done speak for me

May the life I live speak for me
May the life I live speak for me
When the best I try to live
My mistakes he will forgive
May the life I live speak for me

May the service I give speak for me
May the service I give speak for me
When I’ve done the best I can
and my friends don’t understand
May the service I give speak for me

 The work I done
 it seems so small
 Sometimes it seems like
 seems like nothing at all
But when I stand before my God
I want to hear him say - Well done!
May the work I've done speak for me
