It's Flag Day, Lord,
time to honor the red, white and blue,
our national colors, waving aloft
on freedom's breeze and liberty's wind...
But down below,
at the foot of the flagpole,
there's trouble astir in our land:
one nation?
well, that's what we pledge;
under God?
so it says on our money;
indivisible?
no, it's all "us and them;"
liberty?
supplanted by self-serving license;
and justice for all?
for some - but for many,
too often delayed and denied...
Lord, things are a mess,
'neath the red white and blue
and if we hope to become
e pluribus unum
we'll need to surrender
our selves to the other,
ideology to inquiry,
greed to generosity,
power to nobility,
spite to clemency,
partisanship to the common good
lethargy to hard work,
lust to purity,
clout to kindness,
godlessness to faith,
prejudice to acceptance,
lies to truth
and arrogance to humility...
Help us, Lord, to stand together
'neath the banner of the land we love
and to be what we want and pledge to be:
one nation,
under God,
indivisible
and with liberty and justice
for all...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
Tonight's song is not a "flag-waver"
but rather, a hymn for the nation
over which our flag flies...
