NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday 7/11

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of friends in my life...

Thank you for the friends I've had
for years and years and years:
may they be friends for many years yet to come...

Thank you for friends I've just made:
I'm grateful that I'm never too old
to make new friends...

Thank you for friends I seldom see
but love in my heart of hearts nonetheless:
what a gift are friends
whose love is never limited
by geography, change or time...

Thank you for friendships which have faded:
remind me of how important they once were
and keep me open to their return...

Thank you for all the gifts that friendship brings, Lord:
security, companionship, joy, support, intimacy, trust,
serenity, encouragement, good will, solidarity, understanding,
company, harmony and empathy...

Most of all, I thank you for your friendship, Lord:
you, my best friend,
you, my most faithful companion,
you, my partner and soul mate...
you, my brother, my savior, my redeemer,
my love...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Tonight's song is an old one, often sung in a country western
style, though it was composed in 1855 by Joseph Scriven, an
Irish immigrant to Canada.  The recording here is a beautiful
contemporary choral arrangement of this old standard.

What a Friend We Have In Jesus

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

In his arms he'll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.

What a friend in Jesus!
