NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 9/10

On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass.  We pray tonight remembering the words of Jesus in today's gospel, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."  Tonight our prayer comes from the scene in the gospel where Jesus invites Peter to walk on water.

We're gathered together, Lord,
    in this virtual chapel,
by the light of a virtual candle
but the prayer we offer is the very real gathering
of the prayers of hundreds of very real people...

And our prayers are filled
with the very real stuff of very real lives,
filled with very real sorrows and joys...

What's real are our heartfelt worries and trust,
disappointments and hope, troubles and joy,
successes and failures, anxieties and assurance,
faith and doubts, loneliness and love,
heartaches and healings, needs and gifts,
confusion and wisdom and strengths and fears
that we bring each night, in a very real way,
together, to you, in our prayer...

And we trust, as you taught us,
    that each time we gather
you're with us, within us,
    near and among us,
listening closely to all that we say
in our prayer, in our song and our silence...

We pray to you, Lord,
and we pray for each other,
as we offer our thanks
    for your blessings and gifts;
keep us one in your Spirit,
    one in your love
and one in this chapel
    where you're in our midst...

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
