NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday 9/5

Lord, you couldn't have sent me a better greeting card
than the one I found on my weather app this morning:

Of course I know you sent the same card
to everyone who lives in the Boston area
and I know not everyone's as pleased as I am
with this weather - and the forecast!

No doubt about it, Lord
    you've got a tough job
and no matter what you do
-there'll be some folks who won't like it...

Even if you brought us to world peace
    you'd hear grousing and complaint
from those preferring
    domination to harmony,
    weapons to disarmament,
    and conflict to resolution...

Yes, those folks are out there, Lord
and sometimes - them is us...

Well, truth be told, Lord,
it won't be long before you hear from me again,
complaining 'bout the chill and the shorter days of fall,
of autumn's frost and winter's freeze - and snow!

Really, Lord?
Does it have to snow again this year?

And while I throw my tantrum
others will be thanking you and praising you
for cooler days and autumn leaves,
and crisp October nights just right for sleeping
and they'll pray, Lord
    - yes, they'll pray -
for snow to come and cover all creation
    in its glistening beauty,
        especially at Christmas
            - and for no-school days and skiing...

No doubt about it, Lord
    you've got a tough job
and no matter what you do
-there'll be some folks who won't like it...

You don't need to make me grateful
for all the things I like
but give me grace to welcome
all your blessings and your gifts,
    your power and your peace,
in the moments and the seasons
    when I'm quicker to complain
than to praise you and to thank you
    for your presence every day...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land
But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand.
He sends the snow in winter,
the warmth to swell the grain

The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain.

All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above.
Then thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love.

We thank thee then, O Father,
for all things bright and good:

The seed time and the harvest,
our life our health our food.

No gifts have we to offer for all thy love imparts
But that which thou desirest,
our humble thankful hearts.

All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above.
Then thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love.

I really wanna thank you Lord!
All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above.
Then thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love!
