Night Prayer on Fridays in Lent will focus on different images of the face of Jesus. Tonight's prayer is inspired by this image of Jesus weeping...
We read in the scriptures, Lord:
In the days when he was
in the flesh,
he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and
tears
to the one who was able to save him from death,
and he was heard because of his reverence...
You wept, Lord, at the death of your good friend, Lazarus:
Jesus asked, "Where have you laid him?”
They said to him, “Sir, come and see.”
And Jesus wept.
So the people said, “See how he loved him.”
You wept, Lord, over the city of Jerusalem:
As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying,
“If this day you only knew what makes for peace
—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
Like us, Lord,
your soul called out in loud cries and tears,
in prayer and pleading
to be saved from what threatened you...
Like us, Lord,
you broke down and wept at the loss of your friend,
so dear was he to your heart and affections...
Like us, Lord,
you wept over your city and your people
who couldn't make peace for themselves or their children...
You're like us in so many ways, Lord,
- in all things but sin -
so you know our anguish, our loss and our grief,
you know our brokenness, bruises and wounds,
you know our sadness, our pain and our fear,
you know why we moan, why we weep and we cry...
Our tears are your tears, we all weep together,
you know our heartache, our misery and sorrow,
you've carried our burdens, with us and for us,
your shoulders have borne the weight of our sins...
Help us know, help us trust,
that you share in our tears;
help us lean on your comforting shoulder;
wipe away the tears that stream down our faces,
lighten the troubles that weigh on our hearts
and give us a taste of the joy you promise...
We weep for ourselves and for loved ones we've lost,
we weep for our cities, our nation, our world -
we cry out for peace, Lord, we plead and we pray
for the gift of that peace only you can give...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
I think tonight's song
is one that many will find helpful in their prayer...

It’s no secret that life
Gets a little heavy sometimes
Like it’s too much for one heart to take
Your smile’s wearing thin
Just tryin’ to hold it all in
But it feels like the dam’s gonna break
You are not alone facing that flood behind your eyes
Heaven already knows every tear that you cry
So, let ‘em fall like the rain
Let ‘em roll down your face
Let ‘em run like a river
That carries your pain
To the Savior with scars
Right there holding your heart
When you weep,
He’s there weeping with you
Jesus cries, too
There’s no answer sometimes
For the hurt that’s inside
When the healing feels so far away
But in the ache of your soul
There’s a love that comes close
And catches your tears when they’re all you can pray
Refrain
At the edge of the grave
In the valley of pain
When the sadness won’t shake
It’s true
When the suffering is long
When you can’t see the dawn
He feels all the sorrow with you
Jesus cries too
He’s never been closer
It’s true
Jesus cries too
Refrain
