As far as I can tell, Lord,
the universe paid no attention at all
to Easter's proclamation
of your victory over death...
Apart from the northern hemisphere's
natural springtime growth and greening,
creation did not bow
at your rising from the tomb...
Soon enough the lilies, trumpeting your glory,
will droop and fade and mute their tuneful praise
while the clamor of artillery grows louder
in Gaza and Ukraine
and the cries of grieving innocents
sing their hymn in unison,
their plea for mercy and for peace...
So it falls to each of us, Lord,
in our thoughts and words and deeds,
to treasure and to keep alive the news that
in your wounds our souls are healed,
in your dying we find life,
in your rising is the peace we seek,
the joy for which we long...
Embed this news deep in our hearts,
and strengthen us to sing aloud
the joy we find in you, Lord,
the peace which is your gift to us,
the peace that only you can give,
the peace for which we pray...
Protect us, Lord while we're awrake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
Our song tonight hints
that perhaps the news of Easter joy
DOES ring out in creation!
