September 29 is the annual celebration of the Feast of the Archangels: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. This year, however, 9/29 falls on a Sunday so the archangels get bumped by the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time. But here at Night Prayer, we'll give the angels their due - along with a delightful song, praising God for these wonderful beings! (And here's what the Catholic Church teaches about angels.)
We could all use a few angels, Lord!
Archangels, angels, seraphim and cherubim!
We need angels, Lord:
spiritual servants and messengers
of you, your word and your presence...
I need angels, Lord:
to watch and keep vigil both night and day,
to guide me safely along the right path,
to guard and protect me wherever I go...
Send me your angels, Lord:
angels of courage for when I'm afraid,
angels of wisdom for when I'm confused,
angels of strength for when I am weak...
angels of healing for when I'm not well...
angels of comfort for times when I'm troubled...
consoling angels for when I am grieving...
befriending angels for when I'm alone...
Send me a flight of angels, Lord,
with the gift of right judgment to guide my discernment,
with wonder and awe to lift me in prayer
and power to lead me to seek what is true...
