On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its inspiration from an element of the day's mass. Our prayer tonight brings us back to Bartimaeus, the blind man in today's gospel and we'll pray with Marty Haugen's song, "We walk by faith and not by sight..."
Tonight's prayer is based on a piece I posted many years ago - and again more recently - but I've expanded it for tonight's reflection...
We walk by faith, and not by sight
and so I pray...
Grant me the faith I need, Lord,
to see what only faith can see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see all that you love in me...
Grant me the faith I need
to face what I don't want to see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see the peace I've not yet found...
Grant me the faith I need
to see where love is calling me...Grant me the faith I need
to see what others see with love...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what's right when I am wrong...
Grant me the faith I need
to see your hand in everything...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what others love in me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see the path you've laid for me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in my history...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in what I don't understand...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what others fail to see...
Grant me the faith I need,
to see your Spirit moving...
Grant me the faith I need
to see beyond my blind spots...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in my trials and my troubles...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what I've refused to see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see how you watch over me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see through what's deceiving me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in my enemy...
Grant me the faith I need
to see the ways I fail to see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what I refuse to see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what's hidden in plain sight...
Grant me the faith I need
to see how grace empowers me...
Give me the faith I need
to see what's right in front of me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see the good you find in me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see with hope when I have none...
Grant me the faith I need
to see where wisdom beckons me...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in my neighbor...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you in the stranger...
Grant me the faith I need
to see you walking by my side...
Grant me the faith I need
to see what I most need to see...
Grant me the faith I need
to see beyond my selfishness...
Grant me the faith I need
to see the world as you do, Lord,
to see with eyes of faith...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
We Walk by Faith by Marty Haugen
Although
most of us will know this hymn through Marty Haugen's melody, the
lyrics were written in 1844 by the British composer, Henry Alford.

We walk by faith and not by sight
No gracious words we hear
Of him who spoke as none e'er spok
No gracious words we hear
Of him who spoke as none e'er spok
Yet we believe him near
We may not touch his hands and side
Or follow where he trod
Yet in his promise we rejoice
And cry "My Lord and God"
Help then, oh Lord, our unbelief
And may our faith abound
To call on you when you are near
And seek where you are found
That when our life of faith is done
In realms of clearer light
We may behold you as you are
In full and endless sight
We walk by faith and not by sight
No gracious words we hear
Of him who spoke as none e'er spoke
Yet we believe him near
