It's only Monday of Advent's first week, Lord,
but I'm surrounded on all sides
by a cultural, commercial Christmas...
I'd need a month behind a monastery's wall
to protect myself from all that tempts me
to buy in, literally, to a season of sleighs
filled with bargains and sales...
So I'm grateful, Lord, for the respite of Advent,
a secret chapel deep in my soul,
providing me shelter, a refuge, a haven -
where I can retreat to ready my heart,
to simplify my ways,
to make room in my heart
and sweep out what foolishness
clutters my mind, my imagination,
desires and prayer...
I'm grateful, Lord, for this quiet time
to retreat from the hustle and bustle,
from all the hurry and scurry,
threatening to lead me astray from the path
leading to Bethlehem's newborn joy
and that star of wonder, star of night,
leading me on to your perfect light...
Wrap me in Advent grace, O Lord,
clothe me in Advent's warmth,
and keep me close to you and your Word
'til Christmas day truly dawns...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
Tonight's simple song is new to me and seems to pair well with the prayer of those seeking Advent's grace and peace...
