Every year, February 2 is observed as the Feast of the Presentation. When February 2 falls on a Sunday, it supersedes the regular Sunday readings and prayers. Reading today's gospel will be helpful in understanding my homily. The gospel tells the story of Mary and Joseph bringing the child Jesus to the temple. In Jewish tradition and law, a first born male was considered to belong to God. Parents would bring the child to the temple and make a simple offering of two turtledoves to return the boy to their own care. When visiting the temple for this purpose, the Holy Family meets two interesting figures: Simeon and Anna.
