On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on that word of praise, ALLELUIA!
Beginning this Ash Wednesday, Lord,
and then through all of Lent,
we'll fast from one particular word
we'll neither sing or say the word:
ALLELUIA...
We'll still pray and praise you, Lord,
and we'll not pretend
that you've not risen from the dead
but we'll take 40 days to prepare through
prayer, fasting and serving the poor,
to celebrate your rising
come Easter on April 20...
Our sanctuaries will be barren,
no flowers, greens, bright colors;
we'll cloak our prayer in somber purple
and our song will rise in tones repentant,
asking for your mercy
to cleanse us of our sins...
But today we sang out ALLELUIA
one more time before Wednesday,
one more time before the ashes,
smudged upon our foreheads,
mute our voices and our song
as we pray for healing peace...
Still, let us find the joy of Lent, Lord:
the joy of coming back to you,
the joy of meeting you in prayer,
the joy of deepening our faith,
the joy of fasting from what weakens us
and feasting on your mercy and your word,
the joy of serving one another
as you, Lord, have served us...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
