Monday Morning Offering: 8/11

    Morning Coffee by George Mendoza

Good morning, good God!

This morning, Lord,
I offer you the prayer
that's groaning in my gut,
searching for its voice
and hoping to be heard
while longing for some simple words
to help it come to speech...

And I offer you the prayer, Lord,
that haunts my troubled heart,
seeking respite in your harbor
where hope may drop its anchor
and put in for the night...

I offer you the prayer, Lord,
that sits and waits here,
on the tip of my tongue:
a prayer for which I have no words,
none equal to the task,
of voicing all my heart desires
to speak to you this morning...

And I offer you the prayer, Lord,
that I may think is foolish,
the plea that I deem selfish
or just too small to matter
- or too great to dare to offer...

I offer you that hidden prayer,
the one I fail to speak, when
in anger I kept silent
even though I have the words...

I offer you that secret prayer
embedded long ago,
still longing and still waiting
to break the lonely silence
that doubt and fear impose...

I offer you the prayer that sleeps
down deep within my soul,
waiting to be roused, to be wakened,
to be spoken as my first word to you
as morning dawns...

When all I have to say is,
"I have no words to pray..."
then help me trust you welcome, Lord,
the prayer my silence is...

And help me, Lord, in faith to trust
that knowing you have heard me
is your first answer to my prayer,
your faithful promise, kept...

Teach my heart to speak to yours
and help me, Lord, to hear,
to understand and treasure
all that your heart speaks to mine...

Amen.
