NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 9/18

How long, O Lord,
    how long will we wait?

How long will we wait
    'til our anger subsides
        and the violence ends
    in our world,
    in our nation,
    in our cities and towns,
    in our schools,
    in our streets,
in our hones and our churches,
in our politics and our entertainment,
in our thoughts and our speech,
    in our conversations,
in our art and our music
    and in our hearts?

How long, O Lord,
    how long will we pray?

How long must we pray
    for a gentle spirit,
    for hearts to turn
    for change to disarm
       the violence that stalks us,
       the nightmare that haunts us,
       the fears that distress us?

How long, O Lord, how long will we wait
'til we discern that you wait for us
to make the changes we need to make,
to tame our anger and quell the violence,
to make the way for peace to triumph
and rule in world and our hearts?

How long, O Lord?
How long will we wait?
How long will we pray?

Have mercy on us, O Lord, our God,
    have mercy upon your people...

Send your Spirit, O Lord, our God,
and give us the hope, the strength,
        and the will,
give us the courage, the love
        and the grace
to open our world, our nation,
        ourselves
to the peace you call us
        to make and to live...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
