NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 10/19

This evening, Lord,
I want to thank you
for your always being there
every time I come to pray...

I believe that when I pray
you listen to me,
- your heart hears my heart -
even when my heart is mute...

I believe you love the prayer
of just my "showing up,”
of every time my heart may turn
  - if only for a moment -
toward you who's always there
right by my side...

Especially, Lord, I'm grateful for the ways
you catch my glance:
my fleeting nod in your direction,
my heart's secret “wink” to let you know
you're on my mind;
you’re in my heart;
I'm glad you're near;
I need you and I want you by my side...

Every prayer of mine
comes at your Holy Spirit's prompting:
your grace, Lord,
stirring, prodding, nudging me
to come to you in prayer...

There's not a moment, night or day,
when your Spirit isn't moving me
to make some time
and find a quiet place,
to sit with you in prayer...

I'm grateful, Lord:
you never tire of my tales of woe
or drying all my tears,
or listening with great patience
to all my heart might hold...

No thought of mine, Lord,
comes as news to you;
not a word of my prayer
takes you by surprise:
you hear my every plea,
every stumbling, awkward,
selfish, rote
distracted, stumbling prayer…

You never turn away from me
in boredom or frustration,
but rather do you bend, Lord,
always, ever, nearer, closer,
to hear my every word...

Help me never be afraid, then,
to share with you in prayer
what’s precisely on my mind
and rooted deep within my heart...

Protect me, Lord, while I’m awake,
    watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
    and asleep, rest in your peace…

Amen.

I just found this song today - and I love it just for it's honest simplicity, deep faith, and beautiful familiarity with the God we pray to...

I wake up but before I grab a coffee cup
I come to visit just to say hello
It's mostly casual as we talk a while together
'bout the weather and the people that we know

Then I mention mother's surgery
if you could just make sure that she
doesn't feel a thing

And all is well with me as long
as you are here with me
that's really all I need to start my day
That's really all I need

 Later on when the day is in full swing
 it's time to call a meeting with the boss
Good afternoon, Lord,
I just thought that I'd check in;
is there any work to do in my inbox

And did I mention how I love my life
and how that I would never want
to work for someone else

And by the way I appreciate the help
you know there's no way
I could do this by myself

And when I pray sometimes
I don't know what to say
I just sit a while and listen to your heart

And every now and then I sing a little song
about how marvelous and wonderful you are

And in the evening right before I go to bed
I come to you once more and say goodnight

This day you've given me
has given me a chance to keep the faith
and a chance to shine the light

And so before I close my eyes
I want to tell you one more time
just how much you mean to me

And so I'll see you in the morning
unless you'd like to come and take me home
while I'm asleep

Amen.
