Word for the Weekend

Did you think that because I'm away in the sunny south that I'd forget your scripture homework? Not a chance! This coming Sunday is the last Sunday in the Year of Grace, 2007 (the current liturgical year). The last Sunday of the church year is always the Solemnity of Christ the King. The scriptures for this Sunday can be found here and some background material on the texts and the day's liturgy can be found here.
Given the end-of-the-world theme of the scriptures of the last two Sundays, we found ourselves singing Soon and Very Soon as the closing song last week. On the one hand, I wondered if we were singing Soon and Very Soon - well, too soon! But as I stood before the altar before turning to recess, I looked up at the large crucifix hanging over us and mused on Christ's image there and how he is the King "we are going to see..."
This coming weekend's texts bring this point home dramatically.
(A larger than poster-size copy of the image above will be found in the Gathering Room this weekend for the Solemnity of Christ the King.)
