The Parable of the Weeds Among the Wheat by Scott Freeman
(Click on the image for a larger version of this beautiful watercolor!)
The kingdom of heaven may be likened
to a man who sowed good seed in his field...
to a man who sowed good seed in his field...
So begins this Sunday's gospel and the parable of the wheat and the weeds. (Older readers may recall an earlier translation of the scriptures that rendered this "wheat and tares.")
The sower's good intentions were foiled by an enemy who came at night and sowed weeds among the wheat.
What did he do? Check out the rest of the story in this Sunday's scriptures. The lectionary provides a long and short version of this week's gospel. Depending on what your preacher chooses, you may hear just the one parable of the wheat and weeds. Preachers who choose the long version will include two shorter parables: one about a mustard seed and the other about yeast.
Got kids? Take them here for a child's-eye view of this weekend's Word.
Wheat or weeds? Long or short? Mustard and yeast? Just make sure you read the scriptures ahead of time to prepare to hear them at Mass!

Perhaps there's an analogy between the sower who sowed weeds and the dissension within the blog...
