And upon this rock...

Images this post by ConcordPastor

Have you made some time yet to read and study the scriptures for this coming weekend's Mass? The gospel for Sunday is an important one in the formation of Catholic teaching on the ministry of Peter.

The photo above shows the altar in St. Peter Church in Provincetown. In 2005 a devastating fire destroyed St. Peter's but the parish has built a new house of worship which was dedicated this summer.

You'll note a shaded area on the front of the altar. My camera did not pick up the detail on this
7,000 pound rock where the inscription is a quote from this Sunday's gospel:

Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church...
(Matthew 16:18a)

Check here for this Sunday's readings and background material on them.

Below are three more photos from St. Peter Church: the window over the altar, a depiction of Peter sinking in the waters after walking on them toward Christ; and two images of the ambo, with Mary cradling the Word in her arms, like the figurehead on a ship's prow in this town steeped in the history of fishing and whaling.

  1. Beautiful altar, beautiful stained glass window, beautiful Mary as figurehead on the prow of a ship. The designer of the new St. Peter's church did a wonderful job. The parishioners must be thrilled.
