Catholic voters

Here's a pre-election report on which way Catholic voters are leaning a week before the polls open.
Catholics will be a deciding factor in the upcoming Presidential election, and despite recent statements of U.S. bishops against the Democratic Party, current polls show that the Catholic vote matches the general electorate in its recent tilt towards Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"Deciding who to vote for is one of the most important decisions we make," said Catholic University of America politics professor Stephen Schneck during Campus Ministry's CUA on Tap Thursday night, "It is a moral decision."

The University's The Tower newspaper reports that a separate event held Wednesday, "A Colloquium on the Catholic Vote," hosted a panel of five political experts who said exit polls will reveal the true influence of Catholics' voting decisions and agreed the white Catholic vote will have an impact on the election, most likely in favor of Obama...

  1. I hope these polls are correct and I hope that Barack Obama will become our next president. I think that he and his family will be wonderful role models for all of us. I just pray that God will keep him safe from harm. Our country still has some very dangerous individuals whose thinking is as far from godliness as one can get.

  2. Isn't it amazing that others might put another candidate's name in the anonymous quote above and mean every word of the same...

  3. The National Catholic Register reports in their Oct. 26 edition that The U.S. Catholic Campaign for Human Development has "aggressively funded ACORN as it underook new voter registration-mostly in states the democratic presidential candidate Se. Barack Obama needs to win."
I thought the church was unbiased---not alone supporting a pro-choice canddidate

  4. To identify the players here:

"The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education."

"ACORN's priorities have included: better housing and wages for the poor, more community development investment from banks and governments, and better public schools. ACORN pursues these goals through demonstration, negotiation, legislation, and voter participation." (Wikipedia)

I, too, have read that the CHD made a contribution to ACORN. I've not read, however, that the CHD was "aggressively" involved in ACORN activities and I don't think that, as the Register report might want to suggest, the CHD contribution was made for the purpose of supporting ACORN voter registration drives in particular states or with a particular political agenda.

For Anonymous to suggest that the USCCB is involved in behind-the-scenes funding of a pro-choice candidate would imply that Anonymous has read or heard nothing of what the USCCB and its individual members have written and said about voting over the past year and especially in the past two months.

  5. Barack Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate ever considered for President of the United States. How Catholics can turn a blind eye to 1.6 million abortions a year is incredible. Please read his record and his promises for more unrestricted abortions. Under an Obama administration it will by all accounts get worse for the unborn and the mothers and fathers who aborted them.

I don't see how you can consider Barack Obama any less godliness than your so called "dangerous individuals" serving our country.

  6. I am the first anonymous above and my comment about keeping Obama safe from harm was made in the wake of the news report of the plot of two young neo-Nazi skinheads to murder him as well as many other blacks, some of whom they planned to behead. If this isn't dangerous, ungodly thinking, I don't know what is.

  7. I misunderstood the first comment on this post and to whom you were referring.

  8. It seems that well over 75% of Americans are "against" abortion as a matter of opinion. The issue is not who is in favor and who is against, but rather what is the best way to reduce the number of abortions: crime and punishment or assistance and compassion?

What does a Catholic do if you feel the politician most likely to reduce the number of abortions in our country is also the politician most committed to keeping it legal (i.e. against crime and punishment)?

Should I deny myself the Eucharist simply because I think the best way to reduce the number of abortions is to offer compassion and assistance to women facing a crisis pregnancy?

    What do you think?

  9. After clarification of your first post I just want to say Mea Culpa for misunderstanding. I hope and pray both the Pres. and V.P. candidates are kept safe from harm. It is a shame that there is still such bigotry and hatred in this world that really seems to be most apparent during the elections.

I also believe that Sarah Palin will be a great role model and especially for families with children of special needs. I find it terribly offensive for the hatred that has been directed toward her and recently the effigy of her hanging in a noose as a Halloween joke. It's disgusting and all sensible men and woman should be outraged.

  10. Sadly, Ms. Palin was not the sole candidate targetted in this ugly manner. A Barack Obama effigy was lynched at a small Christian college in the Northwest during Sept./Oct. All involved should be punished.
