A couple of notes about this weekend's liturgies...
This year November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday and so it is not a "holy day of obligation."
November 2, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day), not a day of obligation, falls on a Sunday and so it becomes a day of obligation because all Sundays are "holy days of obligation."
This calendar twist offers us an opportunity to keep the feast of All Souls with a larger than usual complement of God's holy people.
The lectionary allows for any of the scriptures from the Masses for the Dead to be used on All Souls Day so it's likely that the readings proclaimed may vary from parish to parish. In my parish it happens that we'll be using the readings also online at the St. Louis University liturgy page, our usual haunt for studying the Word in preparation for Sunday. For those texts and background material on them, meet me in St. Louis!
Got kids? Sadlier is focusing on the same texts for helping children prepare to hear the Word on this coming weekend.
Got all that? Good! Now get to work!
