On the Jewish calendar, the Days of Awe which began on Rosh Hoshanah come to a close with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. In 2008, Yom Kippur begins at sundown today, October 8.
This video offers the sense and the sound of the seriousness of this day on the Jewish calendar:
The image here, Jews Praying in the Synagogue on Yom Kippur is an oil by Maurycy Gottlieb (1856-1879). (Click on the image for a larger version.) The artist's self portrait is standing to the right of the seated rabbi, looking outwards. The inscription on the Torah scroll says "Donated in memory of our late honored teacher and rabbi Moshe Gottlieb of blessed memory 1878." The artist has depicted himself and his wife at various stages of life. All of the men in the painting are of the author at different ages and similarly the women are all of his wife. Take a moment to study the faces in light of the this day's theme and prayer...

I would also highly recommend listening to an episode of the radio program Speaking of Faith called "Days of Awe." Krista Tippett interviews a young female rabbi in Los Angeles whose congregation is filled with people in their 20s and 30s.
ReplyDeleteRabbi Brous speaks so passionately about the meaning of these High Holy Days. Everytime I listen to this particular show, I hear so many parallels to Catholicism's high holy days, and I am renewed everytime in my faith.
