Q.
Which is the correct spelling of Veterans Day?
(a) "Veterans Day"
(b) "Veteran's Day"
(c) "Veterans' Day"Veterans Day
A. Veterans Day does not include an apostrophe but does include an "s" at the end of "veterans" because it is not a day that "belongs" to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans. The correct answer is (a).

Over the past week or so I've had several hundred hits on this blog from folks Googling "Veterans Day Prayer." A year ago when I posted a Veterans Day prayer here, the blog of the San Jose Liturgy Office (Work of the People) linked to it and it's through that west coast connection that searchers have been arriving here in droves. Who knows in how many churches and cemeteries and ceremonies that prayer might be prayed this November 11? (I've reposted the prayer below.)

Mark Alves of St. Borremeo Parish in Arlington, VA was kind enough to let me know that he posted a link to my prayer on his parish website where he has collected several links (including the info on the correct spelling of Veterans Day above) for today's observance.

  1. Thank you, Pastor. Your prayer is spreading to the east coast and beyond. My parish, St. Charles Borromeo, includes the neighborhoods next to Arlington Cemetery so Veterans Day is a poignant time for us.

  2. Thanks, Fr. Austin. However, as nice as San Diego is in southern California, the diocesan liturgy blog you refer to is San Jose's up in northern California, and, biasedly I might add, is the better diocese of the two. :)

    Happy Veterans Day to all!
