I have been saying to so many that the current war that we are in is not talked about the men & woman in the services in the news often enough. Many of my younger daughters friends I know do not even know or realize that we are at war now. Their parents do want to talk to it about their children. (they are in 4th grade). I believe that we should be thinking of them every day- what a wonderful thing it would be if on the television every night there was a moment of silence for all of our men and woman in uniform fighting for our country. I don't care if you believe in the war or not- our family memebers are there.
I do not have any members in my family that are are serving now. My father served two years in the army after WWII, but never really talks about it much- he served his time in Germany and meet my mother there. Any way... every since I was a teenager I played in the marching band and we would go to the Veteran's Day parade and Taps always made me think of veterans and would make me cry.
Today, unfortunately, I have to work. Our school (private) has meetings all day since the kids won't be in school, so I will not be able to go to any ceremonies or take my children (which I am very sad about since they could have been part of a ceremony as Girl Scouts), but I am glad that you posted this so that I could remember those that serve and have served and I will make sure that my children watch this too.
In June 2003 a young man, who went to school with my children and who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, was killed by "friendly fire" while on a training mission in Djiubouti, Africa. He left his young wife and an 18 month old son.
As he was being buried at Arlington National Cemetary, his family asked if I would plan a memorial Mass for him in the local church where he had grown up. I was honored to have been asked. That evening as I arranged his jumpsuit, boots, and hat alongside his photograph, I knew I had been changed by knowing Seth, and that Memorial Day and Veterans Day would forever be different for me.
Today I shared your prayer for Veterans Day with Seth's family, and others who have children currently serving our country. Thank you for acknowledging this day in such a special way.
