Prayer for After the Election

God of all nations,
Father of the human family,
we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise
and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy
in these United States of America.

We ask for your protection and guidance
for all who devote themselves to the common good,
working for justice and peace,
at home and around the world.

We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants,
those who will serve us as president and vice-president and legislators.

Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord,
with a common purpose, dedication, and commitment
to achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people,
and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst.

Amen.

  3. Was Jesus a "community organizer?"

Well, certainly not in the sense we understand that term in our own times.

In some ways, Jesus was more a community dis-organizer, upsetting the apple carts of the temple and the local government.

A good amount of serious debate goes on as to whether or not Jesus intended to found a church, in the sense that we have come to understand that. One would need to search hard and long to find in Jesus' teaching and deeds an intention for establishing an institution like the one we belong to.

That's not to say that somehow the Church is not the mind of Jesus or that it's discontinuous with Jesus' mission. It does mean that we must always submit the reality of the institutional church to the sober scrutiny of Jesus' gospel and ministry.

  4. I would submit that "community organizer" is actually a misnomer: helping people overcome some of the injustices they have had to endure such as unfair wages, substandard living conditions, poor conduct of the justice system seems to me to be quite in opposition to the established (and organized)system.
