Daily Prayer in Lent - Thursday, Week One

Word for the Season
Even now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart...
Joel 2:12

Word for the Day

Now help me, who am alone and have no one but you,
O LORD, my God.
(see today's readings for Esther)

Reflection
This world can be a lonely place,
even when I'm surrounded
by crowds on every side,
even in the midst of family and friends...
And sometimes it seems
that I am indeed alone
and have no one but God...
When it seems that only God is there for me,
is that enough?
Is God enough for me, at least sometimes?

Prayer
Lord, my heart needs company...
Some days I stand in the need of friends,
of support, encouragement
and someone to be by my side...

On such a day, Lord, help me to know
that my heart is not alone
and that you are my faithful companion...
Help me to remember the times
when your presence made all the difference
and fill my heart with just that presence...

On the days when I have no one but you, Lord,
help me to see how much I have,
what company you offer me, how well you understand...
You were no stranger to loneliness, Lord,
and on one day you cried out, abandoned by all...
Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble,
be with me, Lord, I pray...

I trust you, Lord,
and pray you will trust me
to return to you this Lent, day by day,
with my whole heart...
Amen. 2009LentPostCollection

  1. thank you- this very much speaks to me-
this Lent, it feels to me that every day is like the first day of Lent...
like starting over every day, one day at a time...

  2. Michelle: that's actually a good approach to Lent. Many folks fail in their Lenten promises and then abandon them. Starting over and asking God's help to do so is great.

  3. Perhaps at some point you could post at greater length on the subject of loneliness, something I know that I and many others struggle with.
