Later in the evening I met and spoke with one of the other performers, Spencer Smith. He showed me a book that he and his friend Mark Penta are about to publish (February 2010) through Andrews McMeel. It's titled Young Jesus Chronicles and is a warm, humorous, affectionate look at what might have been Jesus' early days. With Spencer's permission, here are a few samples - click on the images for larger versions:
Young Jesus Chronicles covers the time from "0 - XVIII A.D." - giving us, as the tongue-in-cheek introduction claims, "the definitive account of the life and times of a boy named Jesus."
The book's art and humor are clever, always on the respectful side of reverence and good taste.
Before the February 2010 publication, you can still order the self-published edition through Amazon - and YJC is on Facebook, too.

Your very modest sir.

Austin,
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see you're still playing guitar, and I'm really glad to hear that you helped with "The Wild Rover!" I was a big hit at last year's Irish night when I showed up to lead the whole group in singing "The Wild Rover." I had about 200 people come up to me to say, I didn't know you played guitar! We need to do this fun stuff more often. Hang in there!
Dear Fr. Austin,
ReplyDeleteMarvelous to see the photo of you on stage - would have loved to hear your performance for myself! Thanks and kudos for the amazing amount of work you do to keep sending so much good stuff our way!
Whoa! Fr. Burl Ives?!? ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't you let us know before the fact rather than after?!
ReplyDeleteRosemary
It was something of a last minute thing and I wanted to give it a try first. Should it happen again, perhaps I'll give some advance warning.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the excerpts from Young Jesus Chronicles! I laughed out loud - hysterical - especially the classroom scene with Matthew, Mark, and Luke. I immediately called my 12 year old son to see it and he, too, couldn't help but laugh. I am eager to read the book - fantastic stuff. Thank you, Concord Pastor, for passing this along...
ReplyDeleteRefreshing cartoon images in Young Jesus Chronicles and perfect captions. Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the "Chronicles!"
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about them is that in each is embedded a little food for thought. The one you mentioned with the four evangelists seated in a classroom with the young Jesus could be a great beginning point for looking at the more serious matter I posted here.
Hello,

Thank you for the correction and permission, Steven. The appropriate change has been made. I do try to observe such matters carefully but I found your photo on the Main Streets Cafe site which gave no credit or reference to you. I'm pleased to have set the record straight.
