The debate and political machinations surrounding health care reform increase in intensity and complexity on a daily basis.
For an update on the US Bishops stance on these issues, see their dedicated Health Care Reform page. Their stance can be summarized in these four points:
* a truly universal health policy with respect for human life and dignity
* access for all with a special concern for the poor and inclusion of immigrants
* pursuing the common good and preserving pluralism including freedom of conscience and variety of options
* restraining costs and applying them equitably across the spectrum of payers

I just read David Gibson's "The Senate Bill Funds Abortions? Nope, and It's More Pro-Life than the House Version" on politicsdaily.com - This came to my attention through an e-mail from Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. I wish that every bishop in the U.S. would read it. It puts to rest much misinformation that has been swirling about and being promulgated, including on Cardinal Sean's blog this week.

I suppose that spin, like beauty, may be in the eye of the beholder. Here, I'll go with the USCCB.
ReplyDeleteNot me. I'll go with the Catholic Health Association who today said they support the bill. Sr. Carol Keehan, Exec Dr.: “The approach now in the bill would work just as well to keep federal dollars from being used to fund abortion. On the moral issue of abortion, there is no disagreement.” --John
ReplyDeleteI'm open to correction but for the moment I'll go with the Bishops.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your blog, Father. --John
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you as a reader, John!
ReplyDeleteAs part of David Gibson's post, there was a link to an analysis of how the Senate and House bills affect abortion funding written by Timothy S. Jost. Professor Jost holds the Robert L. Willett Family Professorship of Law at William and Lee University School of Law. He is co-author of Health Law, a casebook used in the teaching of health law at law schools nationwide.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Professor Jost gives a cogent and accurate analysis between the House and Senate versions of the bills as they affect abortion funding.
In my opinion, his analysis is factual. It is not spin.
