Praying 10 minutes today: WEDNESDAY 9/12

Find a quiet time and place to pray... take a few deep breaths...
be still... and know that God is near...

A word to reflect on:
I love you, Lord,
   my strength, my rock, my fortress,
      my deliverer, my refuge, my shield,
         my stronghold...
- Psalm 18

(Before moving on to the reflection below,
   spend some quiet time with the scripture verse above...)

When I read your "names" in the scripture, Lord,
   I know that you're my God, the One I need,
      that you're the One in whom I place my hope and trust...

I know this, Lord,
   because I'm weak and need your strength;
   because my will is often soft as sand
      and needs a rock on which to stand;
   because my fears need shelter
      in the fortress of your heart;
   because I've sinned and long to be delivered;
   because I'm lost and seek the refuge of your mercy;
   because my wounded spirit needs your shield's protection
   because my battered soul seeks the stronghold of your grace...

Your names tell me that
  you're the God for whom my heart is restless,
     you're the One in whom I'll find my peace...

I need you, Lord:
   my refuge when I'm frightened,
   a safe harbor to protect me,
   a rock to climb above the flood,
   my life-line when I'm lost at sea,
   my hope when I have nothing left...

This day, Lord, help me know you by your saving names:
   write them on my heart, inscribe them on my soul,
      plant them in my mind
         and let me never forget them...

Keep your name upon my lips, so that in everything,
   in every sorrow and joy,
      I'll seek your strength and speak your praise...

Teach me to call upon you always, Lord,
   especially in distress,
and help me to trust that without fail
   you hear my every prayer...

Let your names be at home in my heart
   and a mantra on my lips...

You are my strength, my rock, my fortress,
      my deliverer, shield and refuge,
         the stronghold of my life...

You are my strength, my rock, my fortress,
      my deliverer, shield and refuge,
         the stronghold of my life...

You are my strength, my rock, my fortress,
      my deliverer, shield and refuge,
         the stronghold of my life...

In the quiet of my prayer
   I will dwell on your names:
      my plea, my prayer, my peace...

In the stillness of this time with you
   I call upon your names
for the peace I find in naming you
   my God, my Lord, my all...

You are my strength, my rock, my fortress,
      my deliverer, shield and refuge,
         the stronghold of my life...

To ponder and pray over...
There are many names for the Lord:
   which of his names do I call upon in prayer?
Do the Lord's names in Psalm 18 name what I need from God?
Would a mantra, a brief prayer including God's name(s)
bringme comfort?  be a help in prayer throughout the day?
What names for the Lord describe my relationship with him?
What will I ask of the Lord today?
From this prayer time, what word or phrase will I keep with me
   to carry through the rest of my day?

(After you spend some time with these questions,
   pray the reflection above one more time...)

Here are some tips for praying 10 minutes a day.  If you find these daily prayer reminders helpful, please let me know - and share them with others.  You'll find an archive of these daily posts here.
