Word for the Weekend: September 16
It's time to read and ponder this coming Sunday's scriptures to prepare for worship on the Lord's Day.
You'll find the readings for the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time and some commentary on them right here. If you're bringing children to Mass with you, here are some hints for helping our young ones prepare to hear the Word.
You might recognize this Sunday's first lesson as a portion of the Isaiah text which opens the solemn liturgy on Palm Sunday at the beginning of Holy Week. The image of Isaiah's "suffering servant" here prepares us to hear Jesus speak in the gospel of his impending suffering and death: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me."
The middle reading is a continuation of the series from the letter of James where we find the classic response to the dilemma of "faith vs. works" in the plan of salvation.
These are rich texts deserving of our time and reflection before we get to church on Sunday. What time will you set apart to study these texts?
