Lord, the Christmas Eve-Christmas Day marathon is run!
Somehow we've made it from December 24 to December 26
and for that we're grateful...
But so much hype, too much hype...
So much money spent, too much money spent
on things not really needed...
So many huge expectations,
not a few weren't fully met...
So much, maybe too much hope
invested in one day,
now tinged with disappointment...
So much build-up and too much let-down...
And all of this in your name, Lord...
Between the settling down and cleaning up,
sometime between the trips to catch the sales
or return the gifts we really didn't need:
give us the gift of some quiet time today
to recollect what this was all about:
A baby born two thousand years agoHelp us keep it simple, Lord,
whose life and words and death
gave rise
to faith and hope, to mercy and love...
help us keep the Christmas story and its message
as simple as it truly is...
Draw us back to the stable,
to the place where you had nothing
save your mother's love,
the shepherds' awe
and the angels' song of prayer...
Let something simple settle in our hearts, Lord,
giving rise
to love and hope and faith in you
and in your care for us...
Amen.
