Word for the Weekend: JUNE 29

Saints Peter and Paul by El Greco

This weekend the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul (always celebrated on June 29) falls on and trumps the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity holding a higher rank on the liturgical calendar.

The lectionary offers one set of scriptures for the Vigil (Saturday evening) Mass and another for the Day of the Solemnity. Some pastors might use one or the other set of readings for the whole weekend rather than prepare two homilies. This week, the St Louis University site offers commentary for only the Mass of the Day (Sunday texts).  Both sets of readings (vigil and day) can be found on the USCCB website.

Got kids? The Sadlier site offers help to prepare children for this weekend's Mass but also comments only on the texts given for the Day.

(This weekend my parish will host a missionary priest who will preach at all the Masses: a week off from preaching for me.)
