Mary, Ann, Jesus by da Vinci |
today's prayer leads us to Ann,
mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus.
Study the painting above and wonder...
Did you come to visit them often, Ann,
your daughter and her newborn son,
your grandson, Jesus?
Did your son-in-law, Joseph,
welcome you
and make you feel at home?
Did you know the mystery
of this child's beginning?
Did Mary tell you of the angel's visit?
Of what the angel told her?
Did you wonder, did you pray,
did you worry, too,
what life would hold for this little one,
cradled in your arms?
Your eyes, your gaze tell me
that somehow in your heart of hearts
you knew what Mary knew,
for mothers know these things...
Mary nursed Jesus at her breast
as you had nursed her from yours,
O grandmother of Jesus,
and of all of us,
his sisters and his brothers...
With the milk of human kindness
help us nurture one another,
with the healing peace of mercy
that is ours in Christ the Lord...
Amen.
