Praying after Orlando

Lord, do you weep
when you see we've not learned to solve our problems
with words, not weapons,
with wisdom, not war?

Lord, do you weep
when you see how we've cheapened life
with our selfishness, pride and arrogance?
with our violence and reckless strength?

Lord, do you weep
when you see what we say and do
in the name of faith and belief
to our neighbor, near and far?

Lord, do you weep
when we label and judge,
when we hate those you love
and yet claim a place in your heart?

Lord, do you weep
when, like Cain of old,
we murder our brothers and sisters,
their blood on our guilty hands?

Lord, do you weep
when you see what we've done to creation?
Do your tears fall upon the waste we've made
of your precious, natural gifts?

Lord, do you weep
when you see the poor suffer
while the rich grow richer
and the gap between them grows so wide?

Lord, do you weep
when you find your children
lost in a haze of fantasy,
foolishness and folly?

Lord, do you weep
when we turn away
from your word and your truth,
from your grace and your gospel?

We weep too, Lord
at least on those days
when we see through your eyes
what we've made of the world and ourselves...

We weep too, Lord,
when we see the work of our hands
or what comes when we fail
to work with the help you give us...

Let your tears fall upon us, Lord:
cleanse our souls with your grace,
slake out thirst for mercy
and flood out hearts with your love...

Amen.
