NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday - August 25

In my neck of the woods, Lord,
we've been drenched and whiplashed
by high winds and downpours
while friends to the south heed
tropical storm and hurricane watches...

At least forecasters offer a warning
of hard weather heading my way
- but who can predict a storm front's approach,
one tracking my heart and my soul?

Of a sudden, out of nowhere,
the sky within darkens,
my heartbeat thunders,
I've no place to run from the lightning
seeking and finding a place to strike:
my peace its target, an easy mark...

Yet, storm after storm I survive, Lord,
none has yet to knock me down:
the rain ends and the sun comes out
to dry me off and ready me
for brighter, better days...

No forecast comes, no warning sounds
when foul weather assails my soul,
but you are there, Lord, by my side
protecting me from harm...

No storm can shake my inmost calm
when to your side I'm clinging:
you are the Lord of heaven and earth -
how can I keep from singing!

Protect me, Lord, through every storm,
watch over me when I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

How Can I Keep From Singing arranged by Brent Yorgason

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since God is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear that music ringing,
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since God is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?
the Lord, my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since God is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing,
All things are mine since I am his,
How can I keep from singing?
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since God is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
