We get distracted, Lord,
busy and preoccupied
with things of little matter...
Perhaps that's why, as October fades,
you spent today dusting us with snow:
slowing our steps, our pace,
hitting our pause button...
We often need that, Lord:
we need to be interrupted, inconvenienced,
slowed down, stopped in our tracks,
this time by the pure, soft beauty of your presence,
falling on us gently, flake by snowy flake,
and dressing us and our neighborhoods
in garments of pure grace...
in garments of pure grace...
Let your snow fall softly
on our upturned faces and,
as children catching snow flakes on the tongue,
let us taste the sweetness
of your early wintry visit...
Have we grown too old, Lord,
for making angels in the snow?
Then send some snowy angels
to make of us the children we once were,
the children you want us all to be...
And as the snow chills our limbs
may your touch melt our souls
and draw us to your heart
where the fire of your love
burns always, with a crackling beauty,
bright and toasty warm...
And remind us, Lord,
of those burdened by the weather,
those who shelter the homeless
and those who clear our sidewalks
and plow our streets...
And when the snow has melted
and our pace has quickened once again:
keep us mindful of the moments
when the blanket of your presence
calmed and warmed our hearts
and brought us close to you...
Protect us, Lord, this snow-kissed night
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
(I realize it's only the end of October but the weather today
hints at winter so I've chosen this beautiful instrumental which,
if you close your eyes, sounds like snow, fallilng...)
