Tonight's prayer reminds me of Ugo Betti's words:
"There is inside of each of us... what shall I call it?
A piece of good news!"
A friend received some good news today
and on hearing it I thought,
"We need good news these days!"
And then, Lord, I remembered your gospel,
your good news for all of us:
the story of how much we're loved,
the recounting of your simple life,
the lowdown on the truth you taught
the history of the hope that's ours,
the message of your mercy mild,
the report that all things shall be well
- and that's good news, indeed...
How many times today, Lord,
did you whisper your good news
in my mind's ideas and thoughts?
How many times today, Lord,
did you message me
a piece of your good news?
How many times today, Lord,
did good news seek to heal my soul
and mend my broken heart?
How many times today, Lord,
in the lives of those around me,
did you shout, "Good news for all!"?
Make your good news the headline
in the journal of my life, writ large enough
for all to read and share...
Make your good news my story, Lord,
recounting in my own tale
the story of your love...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm wide awake
and watch over me when I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
(Tonight's song isn't specifically religious music but it
pairs well with the prayer above and with the need we
all have these days to hear a little good news...)
Good News by Jim Cuddy
How did you know it was me that was crying
Behind the locked door
I don't cry very much, in fact not at all
But I know what I was crying for
Lately the walls of my world have been crumbling
Letting in all of my blues
Oh, I know I'll get through it
I just gotta hear some good news
Well, I guess that we're getting all we deserve
We've been careless for too many days
When I see all my brothers and sisters together
I know that that's worthy of praise
History has its own way of revealing
The moment that we lit the fuse
Oh, I guess we'll get through it
We just gotta hear some good news
Oh, why am I blinded again?
So much I don't understand
I wake up dreaming at night
Watching the lives that I'm holding
Slip through my hands
Oh, why am I blinded again?
So much I don't understand
I wake up dreaming at night
Watching the lives that I'm holding
Slip through my hands
Oh, the anger is rising there's effigies burning
There's damage that surely will last
At this moment in time, well I hope we've learned
Not to slip back to ways of the past
There's a light that keeps shining so deep in our hearts
And it's there any time that we choose
Oh, I know we'll get through it, we just gotta hear
Oh, I know we'll get through it, we just gotta hear
Oh, I know we'll get through it, we just gotta hear some good news
