How long O Lord?
How long?
How long before we learn?
How long before your word seeps
deep into our minds?
our thoughts?
our hearts?
our greed, our grab for more and more?
our lust for power?
our schemes? our plans? our games?
How long before we learn, at last,
that forgetting our history
condemns us to repeat it?
How many times, Lord,
will we rehearse, restage, replay,
revile and repent
these tragedies, these horrors,
this senseless, needless loss of human life
and our dignity as men and women
fashioned in the image and the likeness
of our God?
I point no finger with my prayer, Lord,
I only pray for wisdom, your wisdom,
to guide us all along a path
that breaks the hellish circle
traced by war...
I pray, Lord, for the wisdom we need
to learn from history, all of us,
and to break the chains that hold us fast
to our past, our pride and our foolish ways...
I pray for the wisdom
to follow you, your word and your path
and to make of our world
the world you made it to be...
Save your world, Lord:
protect us while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

Hope for the World's Despair by Jubilate,
1 Hope for the world's despair:
we feel the nations' pain;
can anything repair
this broken earth again?
For this we pray:
in every place
a spark of grace
to light the way.
2 Wisdom for all who bear
the future in their hand,
entrusted with the care
of this and every land.
When comes the hour,
O Lord, we pray,
inspire the way
we spend our power.
3 Honor for all who’ve paid
war’s painful, bitter price,
when duty called they made
the greatest sacrifice.
Their memory
will never cease
to cry for peace
and harmony.
4 Ease for the troubled mind
in endless conflict caught,
each soul that cannot find
the peace beyond all thought.
May they be blessed
with healing balm
for inner calm
and perfect rest.
5 Love for the human heart:
when hate grows from our fears
and inwardly we start
to turn our plows to spears.
Help us to sow
love’s precious seed
in word and deed,
that peace may grow.
