NIGHT PRAYER: Tuesday 9/14

Sometimes I'm tired, Lord

and sometimes I'm tired of one thing or another

and sometimes (and of this I have no doubt)

I tire other people, 

those wearied by my wants and ways,

whose patience has run out...

 

But not you, Lord 

    - you never tire of me!

You never tire of my abiding, steady laziness;

my unrelenting apathy; my purposeful indifference;

my well-rehearsed bad habits; my reliable uncertainty;

my knack for judging rashly; my eagerness to criticize;

my skills for self-indulgence and my flair for mediocrity...

 

All this - and still I do not weary you?

Yes... all this and still I do not weary you!

 

Your patience with me is inexhaustible,

    your restraint, beyond compare,

    your forbearance, never-ending,

    your kindness, beyond imagining,

    your understanding, mind-boggling,

    your indulgence, prodigal,

    your mercy, Lord, deeper and wider

        than what I merit or deserve...

 

Wake me to your tireless love, Lord

and let me not grow weary 

of taking time each day

to praise and bless your holy name...

 

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...
