All you waters above the heavens, bless the Lord! All you winds, bless the Lord!Dew and rain, bless the Lord!Lightning and clouds, bless the Lord!Praise and exalt him above all forever!-Daniel 3
It sure sounds glorious in the Book of Daniel, Lord,
but not so much in New York's streets and subways...
The poetry proclaims your might and power
while our prayer begs you hold back nature's arm
and keep your people free from harm and danger...
Help us tend with wisdom, Lord
the home you share with us and we with one another,
faithful stewards of creation, reverencing, respecting life,
in all its shapes and forms...
We pray for those who died and those who grieve,
for those who've lost their homes and their possessions,
for those whose home was on the streets
- now washed away by floods...
For first responders, Lord, and those who'll work
to clean up and restore, put together and rebuild
what was scattered, lost and damaged...
And for all of us who call the earth our home:
let nature be a mother, kind and tender,
let the power of your glory save your people
and our love for your creation change our ways...
Amen.
