I watch a leaf, falling from its branch,
then skittering here and there,
dancing down the street,
at the wind's own beck and call..
I walk and follow that one leaf:
it dawdles and it pokes along,
then with a lift it leaps - a jeté -
with a spirit my soul longs for...
I am that leaf, Lord,
often stalled, stilled upon the grassy path
and sometimes skipping all about,
as if holding in a hidden, secret joy...
as if holding in a hidden, secret joy...
I am that leaf, Lord,
and your Spirit, wind beneath my wings,
lifts me high in flight 'til I descend, gently,
to rest upon the earth...
I am that leaf, Lord:
without your breath I have no power
to rise above what keeps me down,
to fly beyond what holds me back...
I am that leaf, Lord:
I cry for you to lift me up,
to raise me out of sorrow's depths
to joy that comes from you alone...
I am that leaf, Lord,
and you're the wind I need to breathe,
to dance, to play, to make my way with grace
along the path that's mine to walk...
along the path that's mine to walk...
In the quiet of this moment,
in the power of your Spirit,
lift my soul and carry me
to be with you in prayer this night...
In my prayer, Lord, help me see:
you've been my breath, my help, my hope
each time I've been that lonely leaf,
falling from a tree...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake,
watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
For tonight's music, listen here and in your prayerful imagination, think of yourself as a falling leaf in your relationship with God...
