10/4/21

NIGHT PRAYER: Monday 10/4

As fall crawls its way across the calendar,
I'm turning on the lights earlier and earlier
day by day, dusk by dusk...

And today's showers brought a nip in the air,
unmistakenly October:
time to break out jackets, sweaters
    and long-sleeved flannel shirts...

But leaving this morning's funeral, Lord,
quietly indulging a seasonal grief,
my spirits were warmed and lifted
by these blooms near the convent door...

A spray of blossoms, laughing at the weather,
    boldly drinking in the rain,
bright in their defying earth's rotation
    spinning us towards autumn
    and out of summer's reach...

Nippon daisies, each a mirror
    of the cloud-shrouded sun,
each a memory
    of months now history,
each a measure
    of your blessing, your kindness...

These, too, will pass, Lord,
replaced by color bursting forth
    from branches letting go,
taking leave of June, July and August,
bracing for the fall's first frost,
shimmering with silver beauty,
lacy hints of pure, white snow...

In every season, Lord,
in every joy and sorrow,
in every time, mood and grief
    your beauty blesses us
    in grand and secret ways...

Open our eyes, ears, hearts and souls
to every trace of your grace
touching and filling the world all around us...

Protect us, Lord, as seasons change,
as we rise and sleep each day
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

1. Every promise we can make
Every prayer and step of faith
Every difference we will make
is only by His grace.
Every mountain we will climb
Every ray of hope we shine
Every blessing left behind
is only by His grace

Grace alone which God supplies
Strength unknown He will provide
Christ in us, our cornerstone
We will go forth in grace alone.

2. Every soul we long to reach
Every hearth we hope to teach
Everywhere we share His peace
is only by His grace
Every loving word we say
Every tear we wipe away
Every sorrow turned to praise
is only by His grace

Refrain
