On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass, today, the feast of Christ the King. Jesus seeks to reign over our hearts with his love and mercy, to rule our words and deeds with the grace of his Spirit.
I have but one heart, Lord,
but many are its suitors, seeking to seduce me
to follow any way but yours,
to heed any word except the word of love
you whisper in my heart
where you seek to stake your claim
on me and all that I am,
all I have
and all that I might be...
'Twas you who fashioned my heart, Lord,
and so it belongs to you and no one else,
I cannot even claim it as my own
for it's on loan, in trust, from you:
a gift I don't deserve, a gift you ask me to preserve
until the day that my heart's one with yours
and yours is one with mine...
Break into my heart, Lord,
break in and let your mercy reign and rule
and make of me, at last,
the person you created me to be...
Have dominion over my life, Lord:
be the sovereign of my words and deeds,
my thoughts and dreams,
my hopes and schemes,
the whole of who I am...
Enthrone yourself within my soul, Lord,
and make of me a loyal subject:
grateful for your love,
faithful to your word
and humbled by your presence in my heart...
Protect me, Lord while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
