A little background...
Christmas is just a week away! Beginning tonight, in the prayer of the church, there are special introductory verses sung at Evening Prayer, each naming a particular "title" of the Lord whose coming again we await, each verse beginning with "O...." We are familiar with these special verses because they constitute the lyrics of the 7 verses of the well known Advent hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!" (More about these special prayers here!)
Beginning tonight, then, and right up to the feast of Christmas, Night Prayer will take its lead from these "O antiphons," the first of which is "O Wisdom..." (Although Wisdom is a title for Christ, her persona in the scriptures is often in the feminine.)
O come, O Lord, our Wisdom,
in these short, dark December days:
shine Wisdom's light upon my path
that I might walk wherever she may lead...
May she bring order to my chaos,
faith to my doubt,
reason to my foolishness
and truth to my questions...
May she shape my heart and mind
with divine counsel,
with knowledge of your ways,
and with the strength of conviction...
Let Wisdom be my guide and companion,
the star that leads me to you
in this holy Advent time
and in all the seasons of my life...
Protect me, Lord while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
in our conflicts and chaos
in our struggles and strong will
in our pride and our passion
O Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
in all of our doubting
in all of our choosing
in all of our searching
O Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
when we're tired and closed minded
when we think we're the wiser
when we can't hear you calling
O Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
let your Word dwell within us
let your Good News inspire us
let your Gospel Truth shape us
O Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, be attentive
Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
O, Wisdom, Wisdom, open our hearts
