On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on a verse from the second reading, "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart..." (This Night Prayer picks up a theme begun in yesterday morning's Pause for Prayer.)
The word is near you,
in your mouth and in your heart...
I need a word from you, Lord:
or 2 or 3 or 4 or more
- as many as you'll speak to me!
I need a word of comfort,
a word of consolation,
a healing word,
a forgiving word,
a gentle word of love...
I need a word of challenge,
a word of sober truth,
a word that calls and summons me,
a word of sure direction,
a word of your pure wisdom...
I need a word to break the silence
and a word to still the noise that fills my soul:
a word to root me in the moment,
a word that puts the past to rest
a word of hope for what's to come...
I need a word beyond my own words,
a word eternal and divine;
and a word as near as my own thoughts,
a word that's in my heart and mouth,
a word of faith and hope and love
from you: my way, my truth, my life...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me as I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
