They're meeting in Washington, Lord,
and they're looking for a judge....
They seek a judge who knows the law,
inside out and upside down;
a judge who studies the law,
in search of its rich wisdom;
a judge who understands the law
and interprets it with equity;
a judge who respects the law
and serves it with humility;
a judge who dispenses the law
with consummate dispassion
and true heartfelt compassion...
They're asking all kinds of questions, Lord,
because they're also looking for a judge
who thinks and speaks as they do,
who will decide and judge as they would...
I've found my judge, Lord:
it's the judge who wrote the law
and filled it with pure wisdom;
it's the judge for whom the law
is the word that speaks the truth;
it's the judge whose law is love
and who laid his life down for it;
it's the judge who also serves
as my advocate and counsel;
it's the judge for whom the law
is the measure of sweet mercy;
it's the judge who uses law
to heal, redeem and save me;
it's the judge for whom the law
is perfected in forgiveness...
I've found my Judge,
and Lord, my judge is you!
But tonight I pray for judges all
and for those who seek a new one:
may the judge they find
accept, reflect and respect your law
and serve it in your name...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
