TRIVIA QUESTION:
What's the earliest date for Lent to begin?
ANSWER:
The earliest possible date for Easter is March 22 - which means the earliest possible date for Ash Wednesday is February 4. This has only happened in 1598, 1693, 1761 and 1818! The next time Easter will be as early as March 22 is 2285! More info here.
What's not trivial, Lord,
is that we're nearly half way through Lent!
So this morning, I want to pray for
all those who are preparing for the Easter sacraments:
for catechumens preparing for initiation
through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist
and for those preparing to enter the full commuion
of the Catholic Church:
sustain them, Lord, on their journey of faith!
And I want to pray for all Christians who,
since Ash Wednesday on March 2
have been preparing to celebrate Easter
through prayer, fasting and serving those in need:
affirm them in their Lenten resolve, Lord!
And I want to pray for all those
who made a good start of Lent but have let things slide;
and for those who missed Ash Wednesday
and have yet not even begun to walk the Lenten path:
give them the grace of a new beginning, Lord!
So, Lord, in spite of my trivia question,
it's never to early or too late for Lent to begin
in our hearts, our minds, our prayer and our deeds...
Be with all of us, Lord,
as we make our way toward Easter
and the peace and joy of our rising among us!
Amen.
