On
the Friday's of Lent, Night Prayer will take its lead from different
depictions of the suffering and death of Jesus. Tonight, we reflect on yet another rendering of the Crucifixion by Ukranian artist Irvanka Demchuk.
It's more than 2,000 years ago, Lord,
that you suffered and died for us
and rose from the dead
and ascended to your Father
and yet...
And yet your passion perdures
in the suffering and death
of our brothers and sisters, like you
innocent
yet bearing on their shoulders,
in their flesh and bone,
the sins of others' lust and greed
for power...
In the week ahead we'll tell again
the story of that Friday when,
with love beyond all telling,
you gave your life for us
that your life might be ours
and might be ours
forever...
As we celebrate your mercy
make us merciful, we pray:
forgiving one another,
walking in your footsteps to the Cross
the measure of your love for us,
the measure of the love we're called to share...
Lord, have mercy on your people!
Christ, have mercy on your people!
Lord, have mercy on your people!
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake,
keep vigil while we sleep,
that awake, we might keep the watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
