On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight, on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we reflect on the Supper of the Lord...
How sad when we argue, Lord,
and debate the meaning of the meal you shared
on the night before you died...
Gathered with your friends
in your people's ancient rite,
you made yourself the sacrificial lamb,
breaking your body in the passover bread,
pouring your blood in the blessing cup...
You gave us yourself in this paschal meal
as you did again today, for every time
we eat this bread and drink this cup
we proclaim your death, we praise your name,
our sins are forgiven and we're one with you,
risen among us, present in love
in the bread and cup that are ours to offer,
ours to share and ours to receive...
All we need do is to gather together
and each time we do - you're there in our midst!
How much more real then your presence, Lord,
when gathered together, to share your supper,
you feed us with all you have,
the gift of your life, your love, your self:
the bread, your body broken for us,
the wine, your blood poured out for us
in mercy, love and peace...
Your precious body, your precious blood,
here in bread and wine,
here you set your table, here a feast divine:
your bread of love is broken, shared
your cup of life is poured,
we share the meal that heals and saves,
the supper of the Lord!
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
