Folks have been talking, Lord, about "summer plans"
and that's got me to wondering:
what might be your plans for me
over the next couple of months...
I have no doubt that for all of us and each of us
you'll tailor your constant, loving care
to suit our individual circumstances,
whatever they may be...
I'm sure it's in your mind and heart
to be with me, to bless me, to support me,
to comfort and console me,
to nudge and challenge me,
to lift me up when that's what's called for
and to sit me down when that's what I need...
Whether I can take a vacation or not,
I know you'll be looking to spend time with me:
time to kick back in some shady spot
to share a beer or a lemonade;
time to watch the world hurry by while we take a rest
and a second look at what really matters
and what really doesn't;
time to let go my worries and fears,
trusting that while I'm close by your side
your peace and your strength, Lord,
will keep me safe and all shall be well,
all shall be well,
in your good time,
all manner of things shall be well...
So your summer plans for me
are filled with peace and prayer:
time to rest, to reflect and remember
that you never take a vacation from me,
from my heart, my needs and my cares...
All this I know I can count on
but you alone know
what else you have planned
for the rest of the summer ahead
so, surprise me, Lord!
Surprise me with your healing touch
and unexpected gifts of joy!
Surprise me with growth in my faith in you,
my trust in you, my hope in you!
Surprise me with serenity,
with deep, deep peace
in the shade of your quiet presence...
Surprise me in ways I least expect
and open wide my mind and thoughts,
my heart and soul,
my arms, my eyes, my ears
and all my imagination
to your amazing, invincible,
playful, generous, wise and gracious love
- for me -
in summer, fall, winter and spring,
night and day, around the clock
24/7/365...
Surprise me, Lord,
with all you have planned
for the summer we'll share
in the months ahead,
your Spirit's gift
of a season of grace...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
